LEXINGTON, KY (October 5, 2022) – A new conference at the University of Kentucky will feature research scholars with achievements in diabetes and obesity-related research.
The inaugural Rising Stars Symposium, sponsored by the Diabetes and Obesity Research Focus Area UK and Barnstable Brown Diabetes Centre, is scheduled for Friday 1 October. February 21, 2022.
One in three Kentuckians is thought to be at risk for diabetes, which affects more than 440,000 adults in the Commonwealth. As the state’s flagship university, the UK works to address the devastating impact of diabetes and obesity to improve the health and well-being of people in Kentucky and beyond.
The keynote speaker and Dean’s Distinguished Lecturer is C. Ronald Kahn, Director of the Division of Integrative Physiology and Metabolism at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Kahn is a world-recognized expert on diabetes and obesity, and an outstanding investigator of insulin signaling and mechanisms of signaling alterations in diabetes and metabolic disease.
The full-day workshop will also feature 13 nationally-identified early career research scholars with scientific achievements in diabetes and obesity research.
“The University of Kentucky has invited the brightest minds in the field to discuss the latest breakthroughs in diabetes and obesity research,” said symposium co-host Simon Fisher, RPA co-leader, Barnster Acting Director and Director of the Bull Brown Diabetes Center. “This symposium is an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and will lay the groundwork for future collaborative research projects,” said Nada Porter, symposium co-host, RPA co-leader, and chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences.
Students, postdoctoral scholars and fellows, faculty and staff will also present research posters. Awards will be given to the best presentation in each category.
