An investigation has been launched after an 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead in a New York nursing home — only to be found breathing three hours later in a funeral home.

The woman was said to have died at Water’s Edge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson, Long Island, at 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

Suffolk Police said the unnamed woman was taken to OB Davis Funeral Home in Miller Square at 1.30pm.

At 2.09pm, she was found breathing.

She was taken to hospital. There was no update on her condition on Monday.

The state attorney general and the health department are investigating.

She was returned to hospice and died on January 5.
