On Nov. 18, three professors from the university and the UNC Kenan-Flagler School of Business filed a motion to dismiss Angelica Rose Brown’s discrimination lawsuit.
Brown — a former UNC Kenan-Flagler graduate student — filed a federal lawsuit in late August against the university, the three professors and the UNC board of trustees. The 10 counts include charges of racial discrimination, unlawful retaliation and violation of the Civil Rights Act.
In court documents dismissing the case, university attorneys said any issues Brown had with the professor focused on the research project and had nothing to do with her race.
“While the research at issue addressed issues of race, the content of the research did not translate an academic disagreement with Brown into racial discrimination,” said the filing in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.
The three professors had “a less-than-ideal working relationship with Brown,” the filing said.
The defendants allege that Brown failed to present a “reasonable inference” of the facts that the university and the professor were responsible.
The judge will decide whether to grant or deny the motions.
