Typhoon Nanmadol: Millions told to evacuate as storm approaches Japan

The typhoon is expected to hit southern Kyushu, one of Japan’s southwestern islands, particularly within Kagoshima prefecture, NHK reported.

“Meteorological officials have issued an emergency warning for high winds, high waves and storm surges in Kagoshima Prefecture,” NHK reported.

965,000 households in coastal cities such as Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Amakusa were ordered to evacuate.

More than 14,000 people in the city of Iriomote on the Japanese island of Kyushu have received the country’s highest disaster alert level, Level 5, according to NHK.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said: “Record heavy rain is possible and an emergency heavy rain warning is issued.”

“A high level of vigilance is required for rising water levels and flooding of rivers, landslide hazards and lowland flooding.”

JMA official Ryuta Kurora warned Saturday that strong winds could cause houses to collapse. Kurora urged residents to evacuate before the storm to avoid the risk of landslides and flooding.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have canceled at least 335 flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Japanese airports on Sunday, according to NHK.

“The eye of Typhoon Nammaado can be clearly seen in satellite images. The typhoon has developed rapidly since Friday night,” NHK reported.
