Trump’s tax returns spanning six years to be released in days | World News

Former President Donald Trump’s redacted tax returns will be released within days, a House committee said, in a race against time before Republicans regain control of the House.

Trump is the first presidential candidate in decades to refuse to release his tax returns during both presidential campaigns.

The House Ways and Means Committee confirmed Tuesday that the documents will be released on Friday, Dec. 30.

The Democratic-controlled committee was rewarded last month as part of its investigation into Trump’s taxes.

It was a lengthy court battle, and ultimately the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the commission’s favor.

In a report of its investigation released last week, the committee accused the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of violating its own rules by failing to audit Trump in three of his four years as president.

Committee members said they held off on tax returns while releasing the rest of their findings because they first needed to redact sensitive information.

A spokesman for the former president declined to comment.

The cache of documents to be released may include tax returns Trump filed during his campaign and presidency from 2015 to 2020.

Democrats on the committee said the release of the returns was critical to understanding the context of their report, which also included plans to authorize the IRS to audit all presidents.

They began deciding what to do with the documents after they got them in November, as Republicans narrowly won midterm elections in November and were about to regain control of the House of Representatives in January.
