Thar Coalfield acquires DMR technology

Karachi: The Thar Coalfield will be equipped with communications technology from Hytera, a global provider of specialist communications technologies and solutions, aimed at increasing the productivity and efficiency of the mining workforce, a press release issued on Saturday said.

According to the press release, Hytera has signed an agreement to provide advanced digital mobile radio (DMR) communications solutions for the Thar coalfield.

Hytera’s solution includes a DS-6211 DMR Tier III cluster base station, multiple sets of HP788 UL913 intrinsically safe portable radios and HM788 mobile radios, a recording system and a dispatch system.

The solution is expected to significantly increase the productivity and efficiency of the mining workforce, minimize the likelihood of accidents and bring additional benefits.

The project area includes a 7.8 million tons per year (Mtpa) opencast coal mine and a 1.3GW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant. Both are located in the Thar region of Sindh province.

In addition, the project is also part of the country’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative. Previously, analog two-way radios for basic direct mode push-to-talk communications were sent to workers. The device has limited call range and functionality and needs to be upgraded.

Hytera solutions are designed to enhance worker connectivity, improve mine data transfer capabilities, and provide off-site remote and virtual access.

The solution has a proven track record in improving productivity and safety at BHP Billiton Group Ltd in Australia, Saudi Aramco in KSA, Shell Singapore and Anglo Gold Ashanti in South Africa.
