Corpus Christi, Texas – An Alice farmer says he has encountered new obstacles this fall; however, he is looking forward to cooler days to help his business thrive.
A farmer in Alice told 3NEWS he was looking forward to seeing his crops thrive again. “That’s the damage done by locusts” If it can be grown, it can be eaten, not just humans.
“Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale. All the leafy greens, I’ve grown beets,” said local farmer Andrew Edelen.
Edelen has been a farmer for years, and bugs are inevitable, but for some reason, he says, this fall has been terrible. “We have armyworms; grasshoppers are starting to invade, and for the fourth time in a row I’ve re-seeded and done it again,” he added.
Edelen sells his vegetables at the farmers market in Corpus Christi, but he can only take what he can grow, and he’s not the only one. “I know some vegetable producers who are looking for a table like mine,” he explained. “And because this local farmer doesn’t use any pesticides on his crops, this cold weather came too soon.”
Edelen told 3NEWS, “Right now, it’s pretty much a full reboot. Clean everything up and start over. I think the grasshoppers are pretty much gone. I’ve been looking. I don’t see them anymore in the fields, I don’t see them in the garden to them.”

The farmer hopes to bring more sprouts to the farmers market soon.
