A Russian Su-35 fighter jet scrambled to intercept two U.S. strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

It said in a statement on the social media platform Telegram that radar detected “two air targets flying in the direction of the Russian Federation state border” on Monday.

The aircraft were identified as two US Air Force B-52 strategic bombers “flying in the direction of the Russian Federation state border”.

The ministry went on to say that a Su-35 fighter jet took off to prevent border violations.

“After the foreign military aircraft left the state border of the Russian Federation, the Russian fighter jets returned to their base airport,” it added.

The Defense Center of the Russian Federation stated: “The flights of Russian fighter jets are carried out strictly in accordance with the rules of the use of international airspace.

“It is not permissible to violate the state borders of the Russian Federation.”

The United States has yet to respond to that claim.
