Rockford florist that’s been in business for more than 90 years to close

Rockford, Illinois. (WIFR) – This is the end of an era.

The Broadway Flower Shop opened on Broadway in Rockford in 1929. It was there until eight years ago, when the current owners moved it to Maray Dr. Now the thriving business in Stateline has made the difficult decision to close.

“It wasn’t an easy decision by any means,” owner Michelle Stocker said.

A full-service florist in Rockford has issued a mixed announcement to its customers via Facebook that it will be closing its doors forever.

“It’s sad. People have been coming here for a while. It’s been a staple in our community for a long time.”

Owner Michelle Stock said a shortage of full-time staff and inflation factors led to the decision. The store has at least seven part-time employees.

“When I came here to work, I created the identity of who I am, but I’m going to miss the people here. You know, when people come out of here, we get what we get from doing things that are happy and things that make people feel good reaction.”

One of those clients is Joan Wales. She says it’s her go-to place to buy flower gifts and decorations for weddings and other occasions.

“That’s why I’m here today; enjoying the experience of the last few days of the Broadway florist, and there are so many beautiful gifts for people to celebrate,” Wales said.

As a local business owner, Welsh said it was hard to see another prestigious business leave Stateline.

“Our local businesses are at the heart of our community. You know, they support many other organisations.”

Stock said it was a pleasure working with each of their clients.

“From our point of view, it’s neat and we’re happy that we’re here for a different, important part of people’s lives,” Stock said.

Stock said she would make time to spend with her family.

The store will be open from 7am to 1pm on the last day. The Broadway florist is also having a big sale on all home decor until the last day of the weekend.
