A registered sex offender Lexington man was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on Thursday for possessing child pornography.
Kevin Richard Haider, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in U.S. District Court on June 10.
Haider was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and will be released under supervision for another 20 years, according to a press release issued Thursday.
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that an Instagram user had uploaded child pornography, federal prosecutors said in court documents. Investigators quickly identified the user as Haider.
In 2003, Haider was convicted of attempting to molest a child, according to a 2019 Winston-Salem Journal article. In 2014, he was convicted of molesting a child, the article said. He was also convicted of failing to register as a sex offender and failing to notify authorities of a change of address.

Detectives with the Davidson County Sheriff found several pornographic images of young girls on a cell phone, federal prosecutors said in court documents. Haider is the third registered sex offender to be sentenced this month on child pornography charges, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of North Carolina. On September 22, Christopher Lea Kahele, 40, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for possession of child pornography. On the same day, Luis Armando Diaz-Otero, 33, of Randolph County, was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison for child pornography.
