Angela Lansbury, the Dame of the American TV crime drama, has strong family ties to senior British politicians, including top Conservative Party leader Penney Mordout and the former Labour leader.

Mrs Angela, a cousin of the grandmother of the Portsmouth North MP, came close to reaching the last two in the Conservative leadership race this year and is now the leader of the House of Commons.

But the Hollywood star is best known in politics as the granddaughter of George Lansbury, who was Labour leader from 1932 to 1935, when he was succeeded by Clement Attlee.

Lady Angela’s father, Edgar Lansbury, was also a prominent politician and supporter of feminists. A member of the Communist and Labour parties, he served as Mayor of Poplar and was jailed for a rebellion against illegal charges.

George Lansbury was first elected to Parliament in 1910, but resigned in 1912 to fight for women’s suffrage – a cause Penny Mordott would have sanctioned – in public. He was also briefly imprisoned after supporting suffragette activism.

Lansbury was a Christian pacifist, originally a radical Liberal who became leader of the Labour Party after the fall of Ramsay Macdonald’s National Government, which was deeply divided, but he never served as the party leader. Leaders have participated in elections.

He was ousted after a failed meeting with Ernest Bevin at the 1935 Labour Party conference over defence policy and opposition to fascism.

Mrs Angela said in a 1998 interview: “My grandfather was a very important figure in my childhood. He was an extraordinary man who won the admiration and love of the British labour movement he led because he was one of the most Charming character, a very kind and down-to-earth man. He never drank, never smoked.”

Further afield, former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull revealed that Mrs Angela was his cousin. He tweeted a photo of the pair at the Sydney Theatre, writing: “The first time you dazzled me was when I was 4 and you were Aunt Angela making a movie in Australia.” In the past few years, we always had the topic of politics and entertainment. and laugh. Rest in peace, dear Angie. “
