Houston, Texas (KTRK) — Police are investigating what they called random violence after a homeless man was shot dead in his sleep in southwest Houston.
Police were called to someone from behind a business in the 3800 block of Fondren Road, near Westpark Drive, about 11.45am on Wednesday. A passerby was walking when they saw a homeless man who appeared to pass out and needed medical attention, officials said.
When the fire department arrived on the scene, they found shell casings and saw the man shot in the head.
Sgt. Michael Cass of HPD’s homicide unit said they saw surveillance footage from a nearby business showing a young man walking up to the victim around midnight and shooting him in the head.
The suspect was then seen running south to West Park.
The suspect is described as a young man wearing light-coloured sweatpants, a dark sweatshirt, a hoodie, white tennis shoes and a black backpack.
The suspect was also seen wandering the area for several minutes before the victim was killed, police said.
The victim’s identity was not immediately released.
The motive for the shooting is unclear, but police believe it was a random act of violence.
