Here’s FORTUNE’s 2022 list of the most powerful women in business

This year, the competition to be named Fortune’s Most Powerful Women has intensified. Recognizing how far global business has grown, Fortune Magazine has decided to consolidate its list of top domestic and international corporate women leaders.

In some respects, though, this year’s top 10 list is similar to last year’s, with a few exceptions.

Enter No.Number one for the second year in a row is CVS Health President and CEO Karen Lynch leads the highest-ranked Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies run by women. During her tenure — she took the helm in February 2021 — the company’s revenue grew 9%, and its stock price gain (up 42%) far outpaced the performance of the S&P 500. Meanwhile, CVS continues to play a central role in the fight against Covid and Lynch has implemented a mental health program to help prevent suicide among its Aetna members.

Following Lynch again were Accenture Chairman and CEO Julie Sweet (2nd); Citi CEO Jane Fraser (3rd); and Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO, General Motors (No. 4).

But No. 5 places go to Co-CEO and Executive Director Jessica Tan Or Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China, the 25th largest company in the world. Despite China’s Covid-19 lockdown and “low consumer sentiment”, under Tan’s leadership, Ping An has beaten profit forecasts in the first half of 2022 and plans to be carbon neutral by 2030, Fortune noted. .

Emma Walmsley, chief executive of global drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is also new to the top 10 relative to Fortune’s domestic list last year. She spun off the company’s $13 billion consumer health unit. “This leaves GSK, now pharma-focused, with a lot of cash to invest in promising drug and vaccine candidates,” Fortune noted.

Meanwhile, two executives dropped out of the top 10 from last year: Thasunda Brown Duckett, President and Chief Executive Officer of TIAA; Ruth Porat, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Alphabet. But neither dropped much, ranking No. 1. 11 and 12 respectively.
