Factory fined for workers injured in chocolate accident | US News

A factory that makes M&M’s and Mars bars has been fined more than $14,500 (£12,000) after two workers fell into a vat of chocolate.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Mars Wrigley in the June 2022 incident at the M&M/Mars plant in Pennsylvania, saying workers were not authorized to work in the storage tanks and were not educated about the correct equipment. Training on safety procedures.

Officials said the two workers, employed by an outside contracting company, fell into the partially filled chocolate jar while performing maintenance work at the Elizabethtown site.

Emergency crews freed the two by cutting a hole in the bottom of the tank, officials said.

Both were taken to hospital, with one being flown to the hospital by helicopter.

A company representative told reporters last week that the safety of workers and outside contractors “is a top priority for our business.”

“As always, we appreciate the cooperative way OSHA worked with us on the postmortem review,” the representative said.
