British Association of Black Social Workers to host ‘Becoming a Change Agent’ virtual event

Lexington, KY (September 27, 2022) — The University of Kentucky Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers (ABSW) will hold a virtual event on Wednesday, September 9, from 7:30-8:30 pm. 28. The virtual meeting is open to the public. Any student who identifies as a member of the Black/African Diaspora may participate, regardless of organization membership.

The conference’s theme, “Becoming an Agent of Change”, focused on improving the quality of life and empowering people of African descent through advocacy, human service delivery and research. The session will include three guest panelists: Kathy Clark, Kevin Haggard and Captain Elyssia Lewis. Participant question and answer time will be allocated.

  • Kathy Clark is a Behavioral Health Senior Care Manager at WellCare, Kentucky. She works with children admitted to behavioral health hospitals and residential facilities. She has been a certified social worker in Kentucky for over 20 years. Clark has worked in child protection, adult protection, substance abuse, inpatient and outpatient behavioral health, children’s and women’s residential, and medical social work.
  • Kevin Haggard currently works as a program manager for a Fortune 100 company supporting workplace incident management, leadership, and diversity, equity and inclusion. His mission is to inspire, facilitate and facilitate transformational change within communities negatively impacted by injustice and unfair systems.
  • Captain Elyssia Lewis is an active duty military officer and independently licensed clinical social worker specializing in military behavioral science with an emphasis on emotional focus therapy.

“We are actively recruiting members and filling three vacant board positions in the 2022-23 academic year,” said Nile Trice, Lyman T. Johnson Graduate Research Fellow at the UK School of Social Work and Chair of Social Media/Membership at ABSW UK. “The only requirements for membership include identification as a member of the African Diaspora and an interest in the social welfare of the African-American/African community. Once you become a UK Chapter member, you also automatically become a National Member of NABSW.”

The National Association of Black Social Workers of African descent works to improve the quality of life and empowerment of people of African descent through advocacy, human service delivery, and research.
