Snow will eventually start to pile up on streets and sidewalks as the Lakeland viewing area gets its first snowfall of the season. Brainerd City Council recently held a public hearing to hear from downtown business owners on whether they believe the downtown area should remain part of the special services area.
The area includes snow removal from streets, sidewalks, alleys and parking lots. Part of this work will be assessed to property owners in the area. Business owners in the area have never had to clear sidewalks and parking spaces themselves.
“I just want to speak in support of keeping the special service area,” said Marie Kirsch, owner of Knotty Pine Bakery. “I’ve been in business since 2019 so I’ve now had a few winters to see how these services are performing and I think it’s invaluable to my business and to maintaining the value of downtown Brainerd as a destination shopping area in the area of. “
City Council moved to approve a contract with Tom’s Backhoe Service to clear snow from the area in 2022-23.
