Benefits of Glycerin for the Skin

It’s easy to get tired of researching the latest fad skincare ingredient, but glycerin is the backbone of skincare that goes beyond any gimmicks. Here’s everything you need to know about the tried-and-true skin moisturizer:

Glycerin occurs naturally in the skin, but it’s also a common and effective skin care ingredient. Also known as glycerin and glycerol, it can be derived from plants, animals, or synthetically.

“Glycerin is a humectant that hydrates the skin by drawing moisture from the environment into the skin,” explains Dr. Ramya Garlapati is a board-certified dermatologist, certified makeup artist and co-founder of Skin Medicinals in Los Angeles. “It has a lower molecular weight, which gives it the added benefit of being able to penetrate deep into the skin to provide deep hydration.”

Glycerin is widely found in moisturizers, creams, and serums, and according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu, “doesn’t need high concentrations to effectively hydrate the skin.”

That said, you’ll often find it second to water in ingredient lists in moisturizers and serums. Looking for glycerin among the first three ingredients is an easy way to confirm whether the products you use are moisturizing. As Garlapati explains, “For skin care product ingredient lists, ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration. So if glycerin is one of the first ingredients listed, it’s safe to say that the product has high concentration, making it a moisturizer.”

While glycerin is a moisturizing ingredient on its own, it works even better when paired with other moisturizing ingredients such as humectant hyaluronic acid or vegetable oils or emollients like petroleum jelly.

Moisturizing skin is one of the most direct routes to reaping “anti-aging” benefits — when skin is well-hydrated, it appears plumper, firmer, and has fewer fine lines and wrinkles. So with super-hydrating ingredients like glycerin, you can expect skin to soak up all the moisture, with visible benefits to follow. Glycerin also helps your skin become softer and stronger by keeping your skin barrier moisturized and protected from environmental irritants.

According to Garlapati, the ingredient is well tolerated and suitable for all skin types. The dermatologist notes that it also “has no known interactions with other topical products, making it easy to incorporate into any skincare routine.”
