A pavilion honoring local businessmen in Copenhagen Park

COPENHAGEN, New York (WWNY) — If you’ve driven through Copenhagen recently, you’ve probably noticed a new pavilion by the bridge.

It is part of the Ted Simmons Riverside Memorial Park in honor of the famous local businessman Ted Simmons.

On Sunday, the Simmons family held a tribute to him in partnership with the Copenhagen CARES Collaborative. Dozens of people came to celebrate Simmons’ life and gathered in the heart of the park.

The pavilion was designed and built by his family and maintained by what they call the “tree of life”.

Ted Simmons’ son Scott said the pavilion was not just in memory of their father, but the whole of Copenhagen.

“It’s a tree of remembrance, we have to remember anyone in town and here, anyone in the surrounding area wants to give something to them, so it’s our tree of life. This main tree structure supports The whole building, everything here, our memories, our dreams, everything you want to put on a tree is here. This tree is for the community,” said Scott Simmons.

Simmons said he wanted the pavilion to be a place for people to gather. Anyone wishing to have a commemorative carving on the tree can contact the Copenhagen CARES partnership directly.
